What to actually look at in your Instagram analytics

July 6, 2026·2 min read

Instagram's native Insights tab buries the metrics that actually predict future performance under the ones that feel important but mostly don't. Follower count and like count are the numbers people check first, and they're close to the least useful ones for deciding what to post next.

What actually predicts what to post next, ranked

MetricWhy it mattersWhere to find it
SavesStrongest "this was genuinely useful" signalPost insights, under "Saves"
SharesSomeone valued it enough to send to another personPost insights, under "Shares"
Reach vs. follower countWhether the algorithm is actively pushing this beyond your baseCompare reach to your total follower count
Completion rate (Reels)Whether the content holds attention past the hookReel insights, "Average watch time"
Comments (non-emoji)Deeper engagement than a like, especially real questions/repliesScroll the actual comment thread
Follows from the postWhether the content converts viewers into followersPost insights, "Follows"
LikesPresent but the weakest predictor of what to make nextEverywhere — and least useful of all these

Why saves specifically matter so much

A save means someone intends to come back to the post later — that's a fundamentally stronger signal of genuine usefulness than a quick like, which requires almost no commitment or judgment about the content's actual value. Content with a consistently high save rate relative to your average is worth building more of, even if its raw view count looks unremarkable next to a viral outlier.

A simple weekly check

Instead of scrolling your feed looking at likes, pull your last 10 posts and rank them by save rate (saves ÷ reach) rather than raw engagement. The top 2-3 by that specific metric are your actual playbook for what to make next — not necessarily your posts with the most likes, which are frequently a different, less useful list entirely.

Where this breaks down manually

Instagram's own Insights tab shows this data one post at a time, with no easy way to compare save rate across 10 posts side by side — you'd have to manually tab through each one and build your own comparison, which is exactly the kind of tedious cross-referencing that makes people give up and just eyeball follower count instead, even though it's the least useful signal available.

Ask mayy.ai what's driving your saves and reach this month, and you get a straight, ranked answer grounded in the metrics that actually predict what to make next — without translating the app's own scattered terminology and single-post view yourself, post by post.

The best account isn't the one with the most followers. It's the one that can say specifically why its last post worked — and that answer is almost never "it got a lot of likes."
